What is rickets in children?
Rickets is a bone problem. Rickets in children’s legs is common to see. Its results include weak and soft bones. We can see Rickets disease in children as well. It generally occurs when the child’s bones are not grown properly, or they do not form properly. Children having rickets have the highest risk of problems such as:
- Bones hurting
- bending of the bones
- fracture, and can even break easily, they have stunted growth
- enlarged wrist and forehead
- swollen or large abdomen
- oddly shaped breast bones
- oddly shaped spine
- wide open leg bones, and in some severe cases of rickets child may get skeletal deformities.
The major reason behind this condition is the lack of vitamin D in the child’s body. It is obvious that calcium plays an important role in one bones growth, but vitamin D helps absorb the calcium from the food we take. Just like vitamin D, phosphorus is also an essential nutrient in bone development.

Symptoms of rickets in children
How do you know if your child has rickets? We are here with some signs and symptoms found in children with rickets problem such as:
- A child having weakened muscles
- Continuous muscular pain
- A child is complaining of the tooth and dental problems frequently
- The bone of a child breaks easily
- The legs are shaped in the form of a bow
- Kids of their age are bigger and have proper built compared to them.

Is rickets Curable?
The physician or doctors have to determine the treatment for every individual patient based on the severity of the problem. Although it can be treated if early diagnosed by giving the:
- Calcium
- Phosphorus
- Vitamin D supplement orally, in some cases, if it is not diagnosed at an early stage, then that child might have to undergo surgery. Surgery is recommended for those who have got severe deformities, or fractures due to high fragility.
How is rickets treated?
Rickets treatments are not that complex. There are majorly two effective ways to treat rickets:
- Diet
- Sunlight.
Increase the intake of items having a high amount of calcium, vitamin D, and Phosphates. Exposing your child to sunlight, each day for helping him develop the vitamin D from the sunlight which will gradually help him absorb the calcium and will help in bone calcification and maintenance.
How can we prevent Rickets?
Can rickets be reversed? As stated earlier, eating an adequate amount of calcium, phosphorous, and Vitamins D and exposure to sunlight is the only best way to prevent rickets. Some people apply sunscreen to prevent sunburns, which prevents your skin to develop Vitamin D, so make sure you go out sometime without sunscreen too.
